Nutrition Resources in the U.S.
There is so much nutrition information available online these days that it can be difficult to sort through what is current, research and evidence based nutrition advice versus what the latest fads are. In the United States there are multiple resources designed to help make nutrition information easily available to the general public. Below are some of the resources available and what they do:
Myplate replaced what many Americans know as the food pyramid in 2011. This visual representation better depicts portion sizes in an easy to follow guide of what a nutritious meal looks like overall. This website has important information about the different food groups and why it is important to eat from a variety of these groups daily.
This website, run by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, had science-backed information intended to help Americans make healthy choices when it comes to their diet. With a wide range of nutrition education topics, recipies, and information for every life stage, nutrition.gov is a vital resource for Americans to help make healthy choices when it comes to food.
This website is a free resource that includes a downloadable copy of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, Dietary Reference Intakes, information about ongoing research, and related projects. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans is updated every 5 years in accordance with ongoing research, but the website with the latest research is updated more frequently.
